Now based in Stoke Newington, Hackney, Pat Castle was born in London in 1928 and remains active as an artist. Grounded in a love for drawing nurtured in early life at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, the subjects of her paintings, prints, and drawings range from still life to landscape, and reflect the inspiration of both the English landscape and her travels in Spain, France, America, and Morocco and elsewhere. Pat Castle’s work is representational but highly individual in interpretation, the rich intensity of colour in her oil paintings and work on paper are created through the use of a carefully restricted palate, there is also a desire to achieve a well-balanced design that will draw the viewer into the picture.
When in living Ramsgate in the early 1970’s, she opened The Addington Street Gallery there to exhibit her work along with the work of other artists and crafts people with some success. Alongside her career as a painter, Pat Castle also played a pivotal role in community affairs. With the support of the Civic Trust, and Thanet District Council she instigated the Restoration of Ramsgate project that led to the preservation of many of Ramsgate’s heritage buildings and historic harbour area.
Her work has been exhibited by the Welcome Trust, Lloyds of London, Price Waterhouse, participated in the Southwark Festival, was a recipient of the Greenwood Prize for Drawing was the featured artist at the Boulogne Festival, was featured by the Heritage gallery, Louisiana, in the Art and Design Fair at Lafayette in that county and also shown with the Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Society of Marine Artists, and The Society of Women Artists.
Her most recent solo exhibitions at the Hackney Showroom, (“Paintings of Morocco”,) 2023 and at the Art @ the 111 Gallery,2025.
The artist hopes that her continued practice might encourage others who have left the “First Flush of Youth” behind them to continue to further their objectives and the essential role that the Arts can contribute to our community to be appreciated.
